Dreaming of a road trip, a week in Spain, or a trip to the mountains? Of course, your dog can come along! Here are 3 tips on how to best prepare your dog for travel.
Accustom your dog to the crate
Whether you are traveling by car, train, or plane, your dog often needs to be in a travel crate or carrier bag. Leave the crate out at home well in advance of the trip. Place a favorite blanket and toy inside. Offer treats and food in there. Keep the door open at first, then close it for short periods. Let the dog out and have it search for treats as a reward.
Take the car journey step by step
Start with short trips of 5-10 minutes and end with something positive, like a walk or play. For longer journeys, it's good to stop regularly so your dog can drink and stretch its legs.
Before the flight
For air travel, preparation is extra important. Make sure your dog feels safe and secure in the crate. Gradually increase the difficulty and reward generously. For example, accustom your dog to movements and sounds by gently moving the crate (with the dog inside). Play airplane sounds (available on YouTube) simultaneously.
And one last tip! Prepare yourself. Have important papers in order and plan well in advance so that your own stress doesn't rub off on your dog.
